Welcome, Get Well Wishes, & Delightful Displays!

Welcome, Megan!
There's a new smiling face in the Teen Department!  Megan is helping Pam with the Teen programs as well as the social media.  She's doing a great job already.  Pam and Megan make the BPL Teen Facebook page "Must Reading" for anyone who wants to know what's going on with teen books and movies.  We're glad to have you with us, Megan!

Kudos to Laurie!
Laurie is developing quite a following for her displays!  Check out her latest here:

Susan's Gary is having some shoulder troubles.  We wish him all the best in his recovery

Please remember Laura Kelly and her family in your prayers as her daughter continues to face health challenges.

Happy Birthday!

Very Important Post: Drug Free Worklace

From City Hall:

"As brought to your attention in last Wednesday’s staff meeting, there is a revision to the City’s Drug-Free Workplace Statement.  Effectively immediately, it is mandatory for all City department employees be tested, post-accident, for drugs and alcohol per the attached policy in workplace related incidents.  It is required, that everyone (no At-work personnel) receive a copy of the attached policy, sign the acknowledgement that he/she has received, read, and understands the policy.  Please return all signed acknowledgements to the HR office by Monday, June 9, 2014.   Work-related incidences outside the hours of operation of the worker’s comp panel of physicians, will need to go to the Emergency Room at the hospital."

ALL staff who are city employees (not @Work folk) MUST pick up a copy of the new policy and sign the acknowledgment. Brenda has made copies and is distributing them.  If you did not get a copy, go to Brenda to get your copy and to sign the paper.  We ask that you do this by Friday so Brenda can get them to City Hall by Monday.  These acknowledgements MUST be in by Monday!

Washington National Insurance, Book Sale, and More!

Insurance
Michelle, the representative from Washington National Insurance, will be back on Thursday.  The company offers a variety of supplemental insurance, from Cancer Care to Cardiac, as well as life insurance.  In some cases, the premiums are refundable after a period of time.  If you would like to speak with Michelle, just let your supervisor know.  Also, you get to choose a free item! On Tuesday, the selection included calculators, scissors, and flashlights.  If she has 20 or more people visit, there will be a drawing for a 19" flat screen TV.  Fingers crossed!

The Big Book Sale Is Coming!
As part of the kickoff to the fundraising campaign for our remodel, we will be having a Godzilla of a book sale! We're weeding the adult non-fiction in preparation for the expansion of the Teen area, so we should have a great selection.  We don't have a date for the sale as yet, but expect it some time this summer.

Summer Reading Clubs
Registration for the Children's Summer Reading Club starts June 1. Both Mrs. Michelle and Ms. Pam have a dazzling array of events planned, so be prepared!

Happy Birthday!

Leland & more!

Another Graduation!
Brenda sent this photo of Leland at his pre-K graduation.  Adorable!!

Staff Bulletin Board Notices
If you haven't checked the staff board lately, take a look at the invitation for Nancy and Paul Young's 50th Wedding Anniversary. The photo is wonderful!

Also, the City has sent along a job notice for an opening in Accounting-- good salary, good benefits.  If you know someone who might be interested, be sure to pass the word along.

Have a Safe & Happy Memorial Day!

Staff news, display request and more

Get Well Wishes
  • Please continue to keep Laura K. and her family in your thoughts and prayers.  Laura's daughter is having some health issues.
  • To Susan at  Avoca:  Hope you feel better soon!

Pioneer Display
We're planning to do a Little House on the Prairie/Pioneers display downstairs in the adult new books section.  If you have any pioneer type items (bonnets, wooden bowls, etc.) that you wouldn't mind lending, we'd really appreciate the loan.  No heirlooms, of course.  We've been very lucky in that we haven't lost many things, but a couple did take a walk... possibly in the woods.  (Sorry, couldn't resist.  A hiker's bucket hat disappeared from a display we did celebrating the Appalachian Trail and Trail Days in Damascus, presumably liberated by a hiker passing through.)

Happy Birthday!
Debbie M.  May 19
Kellin G.  May 24
And speaking of cake, thanks to Debbie for bringing US cake on HER birthday!  In addition to being a cataloging goddess, she's a pretty darn good baker!  Thank you, Debbie!

Happy Anniversary!
Two of our favorite volunteers, Nancy and Paul Young, will be celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary this June!  Congratulations, you two, and the very best wishes for many more to come!

Get Well WIshes, Cheers, and More

 Get Well Soon!
As some of you may know, Laura's daughter is having some medial issues.  They would appreciate any and all prayers and good thoughts sent their way. Thanks!

Nancy P. should be headed back home soon.  Thanks to Janice H., Laurie, and Nicki for keeping us updated.

Cheers to....
When one of our newspaper microfilm reels broke, it was Rebecca to the rescue!  Judy found our old film splicer, Rebecca consulted the instructions, and voila! She fixed the reel.  Thank you, Rebecca!

If you haven't been downstairs to check out the Kentucky Derby and Mother's Day displays, please take the time.  Laurie did a wonderful job of decorating!

Congratulations!
We have a couple of college graduates to celebrate!  Doris' Patrick will be graduating from ETSU on Saturday, and volunteer Megan will be graduating from Virginia Highlands.  Well done, folks! We're proud of you!
Program Notes
ArtSmart classes for kids won't meet again until September.  The class scheduled for this Saturday has been cancelled.

If you haven't checked out the exhibit in the Gallery, treat yourself! Margaret Gregg has some wonderful pieces in there.

Happy Mother's Day!

It is somehow ironic that I'm having trouble typing this at home because Mama Cat is trying to nap on the keyboard.  Anyway, Happy Day to you, moms!

Remodeling, Dental & Meeting Rooms

 Renovations
From Jud:

"Look for changes to start to happen as the remodeling project moves forward. After a long delay to work out funding and management details, it is back on track. There are still at least 3-4 months before construction will start to happen—the plans need to be finalized with the architect and approved by the Board before the construction documents can be drawn, and then the contract will need to be bid out. But in the meantime the upstairs admin. and AV areas can be cleared out so we’ll be ready to go whenever. In addition, a big job coming up will be the weeding/shifting of the books and shelving in the downstairs area in preparation for flipping the YA area to the back.
With all the weeding that’s coming up, boxes will be at a premium, so until further notice please do not remove any boxes from the recycling area for personal use."

 Dental Insurance
From City Hall:

"City management has decided to continue the auxiliary dental reimbursement benefit for another year.  For anyone wishing to enroll or make changes, the open enrollment period is now active and will end on May 9, 2014.  Please distribute/post the attached notice for all your employees.  The attachment includes new rates and a form to be completed for those electing to enroll or make changes.  Employees who participate in the City’s health insurance (The Local Choice Anthem BC/BS) must first submit dental claims to Delta Dental before filing any claim with the Comptroller’s office for reimbursement.   A copy of the City’s Dental Reimbursement Plan is available online at www.bristolva.org under Human Resources. "

(A copy of this notice is posted on the Staff Bulletin Board.)
