BPL in the News, Staff Updates

Books on the Bus!
The new "Books on the Bus" program which takes books to children had a nice write-up in the paper! (Even if they did misspell Amy's last name-- at least they did it consistently.)

School's In for the Summer!

Bristol, Virginia schools are offering some special enrichment sessions for students this year.  If you take a look at the photos in the link below, you may see some folks you recognize!

Staff News
Doris is still recovering in Nashville.  Although the transplant was a success, good thoughts and prayers will still be appreciated.

Megan has taken on a new job!  She will be the Branch Manager of Sullivan County's Bluff City Library.  Congratulations, Megan!

A gentleman sent us a link to a blog post he did about the old BPL on Anderson Street.  Here's the link:

Staff Update, Meeting Rooms, & Stuff

Doris
Doris will be out of the library for several weeks.  She was called in the wee hours of Saturday morning with the thrilling news that they had a liver for her.  Surgery took place that same night and she is making a good recovery. She will be out for a number of weeks.  Prayers and good thoughts will be appreciated.

Meeting Rooms
While Doris is out, Ambrea and Justin have graciously agreed to handle the meeting rooms.  Please transfer calls to Reference or else take a message so we can return the call.

 Teen Area Grand Opening!
The Grand Opening is set for Friday at 2:30 pm!  There will be a ribbon cutting and other festivities, so there should be a flurry of activity. We hope the event will attract media, so please direct them to the Teen Area! This is also the kick-off to the Teen Summer Reading Program.

Scholastic Book Sale
Remember, the Scholastic half-price book sale is going on in Children's this week!  They have lots of other little goodies, too, such as posters, drawing kits, pencils, etc.  And it's all half price!  I have dibs on Pusheen stuff.  Just sayin'.  And did I mention half price?

Avoca Summer Reading
Avoca is kicking off their SRP this Friday as well with Mr. Bill's Music, Magic & Comedy Show at 10:30 am.  They have a wonderful slate of events for children and teens, including a pool party and a BMS track tour!

BPL Employee Handbook Sheets
Brenda reports that some people STILL have not signed their sheets attesting to the fact that they've read the Handbook/and or updated your contact info.  Even if you think you've signed, go see Brenda and make sure she has one for you. Next time, we're naming names!  And remember, I still have photos of some people in the Wanted poster from Janice's retirement!

Uh, Brenda.... you DO have a signed sheet from me, right?

Happy Birthday!

RUOnline? Trends and Lots and Lots of Events!

RUOnline?
Via Amy from the Virginia Library Directors group:

I wanted to let you know that Governor Terry McAuliffe announced today a new statewide initiative to help policymakers better understand where Virginia has the largest gaps in broadband coverage across the state.  The Governor announced the initiative at a ceremony to sign House Bill 912, which clarifies and improves the process for installing communications infrastructure benefiting rural communities.  The new initiative, RUOnlineVA, provides a platform for Virginia residents and businesses to notify the Commonwealth whether or not they have access to broadband Internet connections.

RUOnlineVA is a key component of the Governor’s overall strategy to increase connectivity throughout the Commonwealth.  House Bill 912 makes it easier to put telecommunications infrastructure in the rights-of-way for state-maintained roads.  In addition to these components, the Governor’s budget includes $2.5 million for the Virginia Telecommunications Initiative, which provides funding for infrastructure expansion in unserved areas of the Commonwealth.

RUOnlineVA, which runs through early August, will leverage an online demand capture tool created by the Center for Innovative Technology (CIT) and Virginia Tech’s Center for Geospatial Information Technology (CGIT). Virginia residents in need of Internet service are asked to log onto RUOnline.virginia.gov or call (877) 969-6685 and answer a few simple questions regarding where they live and what level of connectivity they have. Responses will be aggregated, mapped, and shared with policy makers and the public to stimulate broadband policy and funding discussions throughout the remainder of the administration.

This is just a heads up to let you know that that Governor’s Office is suggesting that if citizens are unable to access the RUOnlineVA website at home, they can access the website at their local library.  Attached is a flyer that you may want to share with your staff, so that they are aware of the program and can point patrons to the web portal.  Since reliable broadband access remains an issue for many of Virginia’s public libraries as well, you may wish to make copies of the attached flyer available to your patrons so that they are aware that they can make their voices heard.   Having citizen input will help the governor and policy makers decide what strategies to employ to stimulate broadband policy and funding discussions.
So Virginia residents, please go online and make your feelings known. The websites is:

Library Trends

Doris sent along a link to an interesting article about some new approaches in libraries.  Take a look!
Trends in Libraries

Begin with ... Parks?
The library has four Virginia State Bookbags/Backpacks to circulate.  These are really neat items which will circulate much like the Begin With Books kits except that they will check out for two weeks, no renewals, and overdues are $2 per day.  Each pack contains a number of items, including nets to catch bugs, ID sheets for flora and fauna, AND a free park pass!  There is a sheet with prices of individual items that will need to be checked carefully when the packs are returned.  The park pass itself is valued at $66, and the entire kit at $111.65.  These are replacement prices, but replacement parts are limited.

Historical Association, Proctoring, Scams, Music, and a Handsome Boy!

Bristol History Association Files
We have had several folks in lately who asked to see the Bristol Historical Association's files.  These are NOT our files.  They belong the BHA and they are locked.  Please refer any requester to the Bristol Historical Association. Thanks!

Proctoring
TJ DeWitt and the fine folks at the Jones Creativity Center (formerly the Adult Learning Lab) will be taking over proctoring duties, so if you have a call or visit from someone looking for a test proctor please refer him or her to the JCC. Thanks!

"Who Buys Your Supplies?"
If someone calls and asks for "the person who orders supplies," please just say that we buy locally and offer to take a message.  Do not give them Brenda's name.  There are a LOT of scams out there and we need to be careful.  Thanks!

Border Bash & Full Moon Jam
Border Bash starts up again on Friday, May 20, while Full Moon Jam starts Thursday, June 2.  You can find the line ups here:

Big Boy Henry!
It's hard to believe that Megan's Henry is already this big! What a happy baby!

Bill McKenzie's mother passed away on Tuesday. A memorial service will be held on Saturday. The obituary is here.

Go See Brenda
Don't make her hunt you down!
Yes, this one is for everybody! Brenda is trying to be sure that she has correct information for everyone:  Emergency Contacts, phone numbers, birth dates, etc.  Even if you think you are up to date, please stop by or give her a call so she can check you off the list. Thanks!

Pam Update
Baby Mason is still in the hospital but doing well and filling out nicely.  His mom has gotten to go home. Still no word on what Pam is reading to him, but Enquiring Minds Want to Know!  (Is there anyone old enough to get that reference??)

Happy Birthday

Hannah Lily  May 12

Oops!
The original heading mentioned an overdrive update. There was one, about a glitch with the Apple app store.  Before I posted, however, the glitch was fixed so the update was already outdated.  I removed it but forgot to take it out of the heading.  Thank you, Lisa, for pointing that out!
