Bedbugs, Help Wanted, and Birthdays!

Bedbugs
I was off from work Friday in preparation for working the weekend, but even so I was asked about our bedbug problem-- even though I was 75 miles away from Bristol.  In fact, even typing up this post I was interrupted by a phone call asking about the bugs so I think it can safely be assumed that everyone is being asked about this!  Here is a copy of our press release about the situation:

The Bristol Public Library Responds to Bedbug sighting

The report of a bedbug at the Bristol Public Library last week has prompted the library to discard six pieces of furniture.

“After the report, we followed up with an inspection and with treatment. We got rid of all the furniture on which bugs were found,” stated Jud Barry, Executive Director of the Bristol Public Library.

The affected chairs were removed from the building, and a pest exterminator treated other furniture to help prevent further incidents from occurring. In addition, the library will have all its cloth seating thoroughly vacuumed and cleaned. There will be weekly inspections by the exterminator until it can be verified that the problem has not spread.

“We’ve gotten good help both from our exterminator, Orkin, and from our cleaning service, Hygienitech. They understand the nature of the problem and will do what is needed to control the situation,” said Barry.

Over the last few years, incidents of bed bug infestations have become a growing problem for all public buildings including hotels, schools, hospitals, libraries and any other building frequented by the general public. Because bed bugs can hide in items like jackets, backpacks and other soft materials, they can be brought into any location and create a new case of infestation.

“It may be that we will have to phase out some of our cushioned seating and replace it with something less hospitable for the bugs. There are other types of furniture that aren’t conducive to this problem,” added Barry, “But we’re hopeful that our response to the situation will be adequate.”

If you have any questions about this or any other library issues, please call (276) 645-8780 or visit our website at bristol-library.org.
If you're asked about the bedbugs, be sure to tell patrons that we're actively addressing the situation with spraying, inspections, cleaning,  and immediate removal of any furniture found to be infected.  If you'd like to know more about bedbugs, what they look like, where they hide, what a bite looks like,  etc. there is some very good information here: bed bug life cycle and at the CDC.

Part Time Employment Opportunity!
Mr. Gilley is looking for a few good men and women for security positions.  He'd like to have some trained back-up people in place to fill in for folks.  This would be a good fit for a college student, retired person, or anyone who would like to work part time.  If you know of anyone who might be interested, please have him or her contact Harrison Gilley at Main.

Happy Birthday!
