All Clear! And Summer Hazards

All Clear!
We just had another Canine Inspection from Dodson and now, a year and a day since our last inspection, we have once again been declared bedbug free!  Hooray!

And if anyone asks about bats, it's the Chilhowie library.  Sorry, Pat Hatfield, we know how it goes!

 The Perils of Summer
Dr. Feierabend's presentation about summer dangers was wonderful! For those who missed it, here are some highlights:
  • The best way to remove a tick is with tweezers, grasping the tick as close to the mouth as you can and pulling gently to get it to release its bite.  Petroleum jelly, rubbing alcohol, nail polish, etc. are NOT good ways to try to remove a tick. Don't squeeze its body or you could push more of its contents into you!
  • SPF 30 sunscreens may NOT offer you protection from the rays that can cause skin cancer!  Only those sunscreens which offer "broad spectrum" will protect against both sunburn and skin cancer. And you'd better use the broad spectrum lip balm, too!
  • If you're allergic to poison ivy, be sure and wash any clothing that may have come into contact with the plant.  Oils from the ivy can stay on clothing for up to five years and still cause a reaction.  You can also get poison ivy from touching anything else that may have come into contact with the plant-- a pair of gloves, a pet, gardening tools, etc.  A similar plant that causes a rash is poison oak.
Bee stings, wasps, lightning, heat stroke, and heat exhaustion were just a few of the other topics covered in this very informative program.  Jeanne picked up some of the handouts and will share.

 The Perils of Sport
Do you have a child who plays football, basketball, or soccer? Researchers are learning that damage can begin very early, and create life-long problems.  The CDC reports that hospital ERs see nearly 200,000 such injuries a year in children and teens, many from football and girls's soccer. Read more about it here:http://www.cdc.gov/concussion/sports/facts.html

Which makes our next Health Series presentation a must attend event for any parent or grandparent who has a young athlete in the family.  Dr. Diana Heiman is a Sports Medicine specialist who has worked with all sorts of teams from children's to professional. She'll offer guidance and advice about what to watch for with your student athletes.  The program will be Thursday, August 14, starting at 6:30 pm.  Please spread the word!

Health Series, 457 Plan, and Alma

Health Series: Summer Perils!
This month's program in the Health Series features Dr. Raymond Feierabend talking about some of the un-fun things about summer:  poison ivy, sunburn, insect bites, Lyme Disease, heat stroke, etc.  Anyone who spends time outdoors should join us to find out how to help make this summer a less dangerous  affair! The program is Thursday, July 10, starting at 6:30 pm in the J. Henry Kegley Meeting Room.

457 Retirement Information
The Nationwide representative for the City's 457 Deferred Compensation Plan will be in town on Wednesday, July 23 and Thursday, July 24.  TImes and places are posted on the Employee Bulletin Board.  Please let Jeanne, Christy, or Brenda know if you are interested in attending.  If enough employees are planning to attend, we may see if she will come to the library itself.

Alma Blankenship
Alma Blankenship, the Avoca Branch manager for many years, passed away on July 3.  Alma had quite a following at Avoca!  Her warm and generous personality brightened any room.  Here is a link to her obituary:    Alma Blankenship

There was a lovely video tribute to Alma which included a number of photos of her at Avoca and at Main. There were some delightful ones taken at her retirement, with the Mayberry Deputy and the Memory Quilt Dana Harr created.  She will be missed.

Adult Learning Lab Alert, Copper, Birthday Wishes

Adult Learning Lab
The Adult Learning Lab will be closed for two weeks, from July 1-July 14.  Please let patrons know.

Chocolate
Did that get your attention?  By the time you read this, there may or may not be French chocolate in the Break Room.  Jeanne brought back a couple of bars and put them there on Tuesday morning. Sorry, no croissants.... but they were delicious!

Headsets
Just an FYI:  due to our increased cost, headsets are now $3 instead of $2.  These look to be slightly better headsets, though.

Happy Birthday!

Happy Anniversary, Happy Birthday, and June is Adopt a Cat Month!

Happy Anniversary!
Two of our favorite volunteers celebrated their 50th Wedding Anniversary!  Congratulations and best wishes to Nancy and Paul!

Still a cute and happy couple after all these years!
Melba and Marva joined in the festivities! (Tommy ducked out of the photo.)

Lovely memory quilt in honor of the occasion!
 Here, Kitty- Krueger?
Just in time for Adopt A Cat Month, Joan called to say someone threw a kitten out near her house on Friday the 13th, hence her temporary name.  She's friendly and affectionate but Joan's daughter has allergies and the coyote problem makes it unwise for kitty to stay outside.  She's grey, about 8 weeks old, and despite her name, shows no homicidal tendencies. Please ask around to see we can find this sweetie a home!

And congratulations to Rebecca on her new arrival, Copper!  He's a cutie, and if someone would send a photo of him, it just might end up in the blog.  HINT!
  Happy Birthday!

(Yeah, a little early... start celebrating now!)

Very Important Post: Drug Free Worklace

From City Hall:

"As brought to your attention in last Wednesday’s staff meeting, there is a revision to the City’s Drug-Free Workplace Statement.  Effectively immediately, it is mandatory for all City department employees be tested, post-accident, for drugs and alcohol per the attached policy in workplace related incidents.  It is required, that everyone (no At-work personnel) receive a copy of the attached policy, sign the acknowledgement that he/she has received, read, and understands the policy.  Please return all signed acknowledgements to the HR office by Monday, June 9, 2014.   Work-related incidences outside the hours of operation of the worker’s comp panel of physicians, will need to go to the Emergency Room at the hospital."

ALL staff who are city employees (not @Work folk) MUST pick up a copy of the new policy and sign the acknowledgment. Brenda has made copies and is distributing them.  If you did not get a copy, go to Brenda to get your copy and to sign the paper.  We ask that you do this by Friday so Brenda can get them to City Hall by Monday.  These acknowledgements MUST be in by Monday!
