Pam and the Witch, Genealogy, Debbie, Megan, and More

Debbie Has Left the Building

Our long-time cataloger, Debbie, has retired.  She's taking her last week as vacation time. We wish her all the best in retirement and hope she will enjoy her time with Allie and Brian.

A job description has been posted at our website.  We hope to have someone in place before the first of the year.

Pam Neal presents "The Bell Witch" Legend!!!

When:  October 31, 2015 | 12 pm
Where:  Birthplace of Country Music Museum
During Halloween week, both kids and adults can come by the Birthplace of Country Music Museum to hear spooky and music-related local tales.

The museum will also host a retelling of “The Bell Witch” legend suitable for all ages on Saturday, October 31 at 12 noon. Free and open to the public, this event is the perfect way for families to end their morning after Pumpkin Palooza at the Farmers’ Market and trick-or-treating on State Street. Bristol Public Library children’s librarian Pam Neal will entertain with this wonderful spooky tale, and there will be candy for your little trick-or-treaters.

(The above is from Believe in Bristol.  We know Pam works with YA department, not children's.  However, the exclamation points in the heading ARE mine!)

Genealogy Classes
Due to the renovations, Susan will NOT be holding the monthly Genealogy classes until January.  However, if anyone asks do explain that Susan will offer one on one help at Avoca.  Have the person call Susan at 423-968-9663 for an appointment.

 Congratulations, Megan!
Welcome to the world, Henry Oliver Hopkins!  He was born late Saturday afternoon and weighed in at 8 pounds, 12 ounces.

  Fall Back!
Remember this Sunday, November 1,  it's time to turn back the clocks!

Holiday Closing, Halloween, and LIS Staff Calendar

Halloween
The Children's Department will be having their Halloween party early this year! It will be on Tuesday, October 20.  In addition, there will be trick or treat days for the Story Timers on Monday the 26th and Tuesday the 27th.  Staff at Main may dress up in costume on the 27th if you wish.

LIS Staff Calendar
In an effort to help people stay up to date, there will be a link on the LIS computers people can click to check work schedules.  For times when a library computer is not available such as when you're at home, here is the link to the calendar:

Notice that you can view by week or by month, and you can look back or forward through the months. You may want to bookmark the link on your non-library device.

Veterans Day
We will be closed on Wednesday, November 11, for Veterans Day.  However, we will NOT be closing at 5 pm on Tuesday, November 10.

Adult Learning Lab Schedule, Readathon, Birthdays!

Adult Learning Lab Schedule Oct. 19-24

Katie will be out of town for the week, so the ALL schedule will be somewhat altered. Doris is trying to arrange coverage for the Open Lab times, and Mt. Rogers will be holding their regular classes.  A copy of the week's schedule will be available at Circ and Reference so we won't be giving folks wrong information. Of course, there's nothing we can do about the copies of the monthly schedule that folks have already picked up, but we can let them know about the alterations if asked.

Dewey's 24 Hour Readathon
Okay, everyone who needs an excuse to sit and read awhile:  the Readathon is here!  Yep, folks will try to read for as many hours as they can on Saturday, October 17. For more information, check out their site:

Why participate?  Hey, it's a chance to read!  Why not?? Also you can win prizes, but you have to register.  Me, I think the best prize is a chance to read. Don't have time to read for hours that day?  You can take an hour and be a Cheerleader for those who are reading.

Birthdays, Birthdays, and More Birthdays!

October is now the big birthday month with eight days!  Of course some folk don't like to have their special day broadcast, and we can all respect that.  Otherwise, happy birthday to:
Christy L  October 20
Katie (ALL) October 23
Ashley  October 25
Judy  October 27

Meet and Greet, Birthdays!

 Meet and Greet

The Bristol Public Library invites the community to a reception welcoming new Executive Director Amy Kimani to the Library. The reception will be held in the J. Henry Kegley Meeting Room from 5 PM until 6 PM on October 15, 2015. The reception will follow the regular monthly meeting of the BPL Board of Trustees which begins at 4 PM.

“We are all very excited to have Amy join our Bristol and our Library family. Her passion for our library and our community is already very evident, and we hope our patrons and community members will drop and say hello,” says Doris Stickley, Director of Marketing for the Library. “Amy has become Executive Director in the midst of many exciting changes and positive growth. Her leadership is going to make those changes and growth central to our community and very much in step with our mission, ‘Expanding Minds Building Community.’"

Staff may attend if they wish.  There will be some lovely refreshments! You may have to drag Jeanne away from the mini pumpkin cheesecakes.

Happy Birthday

Condolences, Flu Shots, Party and More

Emily Hubbard
Emily Hubbard, the former wife of our board member Archie Hubbard, passed away earlier this week.  We extend our sincere condolences and sympathy to the Hubbard family.  Here is a link to the obituary: Emily Hubbard

Flu Shots
From Trish Henderson:
As part of the City’s wellness awareness, I am pleased to inform you that the City of Bristol, Virginia will again provide the seasonal flu clinic for employees again this year administered by Mount Rogers Health District.  As always, receiving a flu shot is voluntary.  Only active employees and their spouses are being offered a vaccination.  At-Work employees who are working during the scheduled flu clinic may also receive a vaccination if desired.

All participants will be required to sign a consent form at time of vaccination releasing the City of Bristol Virginia and Mount Rogers Health District staff from any liability which may arise as a result of taking the vaccine.

Participants are asked to bring a copy of their insurance cards along with the completed flu encounter form on the day of the shot
.  If you are unable to meet the schedule requirements as set forth below, then you may present your insurance card and get a vaccination from any participating pharmacy with The Local Choice/Anthem BC/BS or your physician at no cost.

The vaccine schedule is as follows:

            Thursday, October 8, 2015                          1:00 pm – 5:00 pm

            Tuesday, October 20, 2015                          8:00 am – 12:00 pm

Vaccines will be administered in City Hall.

No appointment necessary.  Please contact HR with any questions.

Copies of the form are available on the staff bulletin board or in reference.

PARTY!!!
There's a nip in the air, so we're going to celebrate the arrival of Fall!  On Thursday, October 1, bring something tasty to share.  The festivities will start at noon in the break room. If you are very nice to Jeanne, she won't cook.
Elmer hopes there's something tastier than plastic leaves.

Rhythm & Roots
Hope everyone had a chance to enjoy a little R&R!  There was a dazzling array of music, and there were some familiar faces on stage.
The Harlow Experience

No wonder he "geeked" the banjo!

 Greg Morrell
The local TV stations ran a very nice tribute to Greg Morrell in observance of the anniversary of the Americans with Disability Act.  Greg's mother Sue was interviewed.  Sue was a long time library employee at the Avoca Branch Library and was "Granny Sue" to most of the kids there.
The story can be found here.

   Cabela Tickets
LIS staff members, if you have not picked up your ticket from Jeanne, please do so SOON!  Remember the ticket is Tuesday night, Sept. 29, from 5-9 pm

Brenda's BPL Anniversary

You work 43 years and what do you get?
You should have money and maybe a jet.
St. Peter, don't you call me 'cause I can't go
They've wrapped my car from do' to do'!

 (with apologies to Tennessee Ernie!)

Happy Anniversary!!!! Brenda says she came here while she was still in high school, but I'm sure it was really kindergarten, right? That's the only way she could possibly have been here 43 years!
