Family Race Night & Rhythm & Roots Reunion News!

As most know, we will be having Plaza and Gallery events on Thursday for Food City Family Race Night.  Janice will be selling merchandise on the Plaza, Michelle will be having marble races, and at least one local author will be here to sign books.  Coffee and cookies will be served in the Fleenor Art Gallery.  Events will start at 1 pm and run until about 6 pm, though the coffee and cookies may close a bit early depending on how much traffic we get and how well the cookies hold out.  If Jeanne is working the table, odds are cookies won't last long.

From Jud:
"We will be closed to the public again this year for Rhythm and Roots (September 14, 15, 16).

If anyone asks, we don’t really have a  choice because the library straddles the ticket control line. Somebody could come into the library through our “church side” entrance, exit through the Piedmont door, and be inside the event—without a ticket.

Staff can still work here, particularly Friday, September 14, so everyone can get in their hours."

We may be having some events on the Plaza during R&RR, but that's still under consideration.  Also, we don't know if we'll be getting free tickets this year or not.  You may want to keep in mind that right now three day tickets are $40; on September 1, they go up to $50 and will be $60 at the gate.

A Saturday to Remember!

Message From Jud:

"A big thanks to everyone who had anything to do with last Saturday’s event at the library, whether you helped plan it, helped work it, or carried on with your regular duties that day. It was a real team effort! My feeling is that it was a successful effort, particularly considering that we only had two weeks to put it together. Thanks especially to Janice Hoelscher, who made sure all the bases were covered. (whereas I just had to make sure all the basses were covered J)"

Here are a few photos from early in the event, prior to Jeanne's appointment as Guardian of the Tip Jar.

Joyce Kistner, Chuck Thompson & Ben Talley were our author vendors.
Mrs. Kistner meeting her public!
The ultimate in irony?
Laurie & the Children's Department helped entertain young visitors!
Pam & her teens promoted the Teen program, while other staff members & volunteers sold merchandise!
Lawson Garrett & Duciferous provided musical entertainment. . .
.. to an appreciative audience!
Plazaarty Czar Janice made sure everything went smoothly!

Literacy Academy hits the big time, Party on the Plaza, and Lemonade!

The Patricia Freedman Literacy Academy has earned the notice of none other than Library Journal! They have a wonderful article about the good work done by LAB and the challenges that lie ahead for it and for libraries in general. You can read the article here.

The Party on the Plaza (Plazaarty!) is coming together nicely.  Several local authors have expressed an interest in signing books, including Chuck Thompson, Ben Talley, and Joyce Kistner.  Let's all hope for good weather, both for our activities and for all those who'll be here for the music.

We'll have "Don't make me SHHHH you" shirts for sale as well as T-shirts promoting Jud's blognovel (curious?  Google "Banshee 3:33"), coffee cups, books and other goodies.

Remember to wear your "Don't make me SHHHH you!" shirts on Saturday-- or, if you won't be here that day, then wear them on Friday to boost awareness.  Thanks!

The Saturday, August 4 edition of the Bristol Herald Courier had a couple of great photos from the lemonade sale! If you missed it, the book club for 8-10 year olds set up a lemonade stand in honor of the book they'd just finished reading.  Of course, Anita was one of the first customers! You can see more photos on the library's facebook page.

Thanks to Doris for the fabulous Chocolate Covered Strawberries Cake!  She made it in honor of our slew of August birthdays, which brings up:

"It's Brenda's birthday!  Let's play in a big puddle!!"
Happy Birthday!

It's a Plazaarty!!

In case you haven't heard, we'll be having a party  and bazaar on the library plaza, plus a new art exhibit to show off in the Gallery so we're having a "Plazaarty!"  (Pronounced "Plahza-Art-Tee") Michelle will have some children's activities while parents can have coffee in the hallway upstairs, and admire the new exhibition in the Gallery.  On the Plaza, we'll have tables set up with information about the library and items for sale, including books by local authors, coffee cups, T-shirts and other goodies.

Speaking of T-shirts, one of the items for sale will be the "Don't make me Shhhh! you" shirts.  Please wear your shirt on August 10 and/or August 11 to promote the sale.

Janice H. has agreed to helm this enterprise so I've put away the "Janice for Plazaarty Czar!" campaign buttons.  In gratitude for Janice undertaking this task, we ask that everyone give her as much help and support as possible.

Happy, Happy, Happy Birthday!!

My name is Puppy. People laugh when I tell them that.  I don't know why.  I like boxes, pieces of paper, naptime, playtime, chasetime and foodtime.  And I love my mom, Rebecca!

Got slogans?

We're thinking about coming up with a product line for BPL with coffee cups, T-shirts, and souvenir type things to sell at special events.  We need ideas!  Creative is good.  Give your ideas to Janice and maybe you'll see it on a cup! For example, Don has done a great sketch of a book behind bars and the slogan "I Got Booked at the Bristol Public Library!"  Winner will receive a wooden nickel, good for a free soft drink from the gift shop!

Tutor Wanted, Ice Cream Social & More!

 Advance August Alerts
To make life a bit easier for some of our patrons, there are several days in August when books will NOT be due even thought the library is open.  Astonishingly, these dates coincide with the date for the Mumford and Sons event the second weekend in August and Food City Family Race Night the fourth week in August. If you have a puzzled patron wondering why a book's due date is, say, August 13 instead of August 11, that's the reason.

MS Word Tutor Wanted
A patron is looking for someone to tutor him on MS Word. He can type, but is having some trouble with some formatting.  He is willing to pay for tutoring.  He is aware of the services at the Literacy Academy but would prefer to work with someone one on one.  If you're interested or know someone who would be interested, please see Jeanne in Reference.

Ice Cream Social
Janice is hosting an Ice Cream Social in the Staff Kitchen on Tuesday, July 17 from 2:00 pm-3:00 pm. So come eat ice cream & be social!

Happy Birthday

 Racin' into August

Even though it's not yet August, it certainly feels like August out, so this is as good a time as any to mention that on Thursday, August 23, the annual Food City Family Race Night will be forcing some changes in parking around the library.  It appears now that the major closure will be the lot across from Main on Goode Street but as long-time employees know, parking is always a bit of an issue during Race Night.

Turkish Delight
Welcome back to Jud! Be sure to ask him about his adventures in Turkey. He's posted some wonderful pictures at his Facebook page.  In the meantime, he has a question for all of us:  What is the significance of the magnet he brought back?

Tell Jud what it is and your name will be entered into a drawing for a one of a kind woven Turkish mousepad!

By the way, do remember that staffers can also be patrons and utilize the library's resources.

Happy Birthday
